Welcome to the River Valley Free Press

Post by Admin on Sat May 24, 2008 8:56 am

We're hoping that this forum is a more user friendly way of assisting communication in the River Valley area. The rules here are the same as at the Rumford Free Press; respectful free speech and open debate.

You can view this site without registering. If you want to post your own topics or respond to others, you will have to register and be signed in. The reason for requiring registration is to provide a way to discourage those who would post "destructively" as some did on the Open Doar. It also allows for easier moderation. It's pretty hard to single out one post from 100 "anonymous" posters. It also offers continuity for people reading posted comments. We do not track your identity. We don't collect any personal information other than a valid e-mail address. Feel free to register under a user name or nick name. We can see who your internet provider is but not where you live.

Welcome to our new forum!

River Valley Free Press welcomes your participation in our Discussion Forums. These forums offer you the chance to interact with members of our community.

In order to keep these forums enjoyable and interesting for all of our users, we ask simply that you follow these minimal rules. By participating in the Discussion Forums, you are consenting to these rules. Violators may be warned, suspended from posting, or barred from the forums or chats, at the discretion of the River Valley Free Press staff.

  • Exercise common sense and be considerate toward your fellow users. Diversity of opinion and intelligent debate is encouraged; rudeness, sexual innuendos, insulting posts, personal attacks or purposeless inflammatory posts will not be tolerated. Disagreeing with an idea of another community member is different from attacking that individual personally. The River Valley Free Press staff reserve the right to delete posts and/or whole threads we determine are of an abusive or disruptive nature. Please let the staff know if you feel things are getting off-topic or inappropriate. We further reserve the right, in our sole discretion, to remove a user's privilege to post content in our discussion forums. Suspended members who re-register with new accounts will have those accounts deactivated without notice. Repeated attempts will result in our contacting your ISP with a complaint.
  • Do not post off-topic. Please keep your comments consistent with the subject and purpose of the conversation thread. Consistent off-topic post will not be tolerated and will be deleted or redirected to our general chat area.
  • No "ALL CAPS" or all-bolds please. Posts submitted in all-caps or all-bolds will be deleted automatically. No animated avatars.
  • You must use register a username before posting and provide an e-mail address during the registration process. Your e-mail address will not be published on the site, except by you actively choosing to do so. You are limited to one user account on the system. Under no circumstances may you create alternate names, assume secondary identities or use someone else's name for your name. Please contact the admin if you need help setting up your account or an e-mail address.
  • You alone are responsible for the material you post. We are a distributor of content supplied by third parties and users of the chats and forums. Any opinions, advice, statements, services, offers, or other information or content expressed or made available by third parties, or any other user of the forums, are those of the respective author(s) or distributor(s) and not of us. You will not knowingly post content or links to content that violates the copyright, trademark, patent or other intellectual property right of any third party and that you will remove the same should you discover that you have violated this provision. Likewise, you may not post content or links to content that is libelous, defamatory, offensive, obscene, racist, abusive, that violates a third party's right to privacy, that otherwise violates any applicable local, state, national or international law, or that is otherwise inappropriate. You understand and agree that River Valley Free Press is not responsible for any content posted by third parties. You will indemnify River Valley Free Press its employees, agents, and affiliates from any and all claims and/or damages (including but not limited to reasonable attorneys' fees) resulting from any claim brought by any third party relating to content you have posted.
  • We shall have the right, but not the obligation, to monitor the content of the forums to determine compliance with all sections of this Agreement and any other operating rules established by us. We shall have the right in our sole discretion to edit, refuse to post, remove, or otherwise alter any material submitted to or posted on the chats or forums. Without limiting the foregoing, we shall have the right to remove any material that we, in our sole discretion, find to be in violation of this agreement or inappropriate for any reason whatever without consent. Notwithstanding all of the foregoing, users remain solely responsible for the content of their messages.
  • You acknowledge and agree that you use and/or rely on any information obtained through the discussion forums at your own risk. River Valley Free Press is not in any manner endorsing the content of the discussion groups and cannot and will not vouch for its reliability. The disclaimer of liability contained in this section applies to any damages or injury caused by any failure of performance, error, omission, interruption, deletion, defect, delay in operation or transmission, computer virus, communication line failure, theft or destruction or unauthorized access to, alteration of, or use of record, whether for breach of contract, tortious behavior, negligence, or under any other cause of action.
  • You understand and agree that these discussion forums are to be used only for non-commercial purposes. We do not allow people to post threads or to send private messages or emails to users here that advertise or solicit any products, services, funds or donations. Explicit advertising and soliciting in signatures is also prohibited. Any threads/posts of these types will be deleted.
  • Advertising, spamming and trolling is not allowed. This includes using the forum email and Private message system to spam other members.
  • No live links (hyperlinks) to personal sites without approval.
  • NOTICE- Editing posts is a privilege- any one abusing this privilege will result in the members posting privileges being suspended for a length of time determined by the moderator. If we find it becomes a big problem we will just disable that forum option completely. Editing posts for grammatical error, additional information or re-phrasing is fine so long as it doesn't confuse or misrepresent the responses of those who have posted after you. We are just asking for some common sense. If you're not sure, please ask. Once a topic has been replied to please do not change the topic title. In some cases members have asked to have posts removed or topics they have initiated removed. This is done at the discretion of the administration/moderators.
While these rules cover most common situations, they cannot anticipate everything. Consequently we reserve the right to take any actions we deem appropriate to ensure these forums are not disrupted or abused in any way.

Limits on Free Speech - - What the Supreme Court Has Said

''[I]t is well understood that the right of free speech is not absolute
at all times and under all circumstances. There are certain
well-defined and narrowly limited classes of speech, the prevention and
punishment of which have never been thought to raise any Constitutional
problem. These include the lewd and obscene, the profane, the libelous,
and the insulting or 'fighting' words--those which by their very
utterance inflict injury or tend to incite an immediate breach of the
peace. It has been well observed that such utterances are no essential
part of any exposition of ideas, and are of such slight social value as
a step to truth that any benefit that may be derived from them is
clearly outweighed by the social interest in order and morality.‘”
–Chaplinsky v. New Hampshire, 315 U.S. 568 (1942)
