I thought we were bankrupt??

Post by T on Sat Sep 01, 2012 1:15 pm

I thought the state (we, the people) was bankrupt?? That's what every Tea Partier will tell you as to why we cannot afford anything government related. And yet, the Oxford Casino can rake in $10 million in just two months? for what... a little entertainment? At this rate, the tiny Oxford Casino will bring in $60 million in its first full year of operation.

Yeah, we're broke alright... SJ Link

Sales at Maine's fireworks stores have far surpassed initial projections when fireworks became legal last year for the first time in 63 years.  With a sales tax of 5 percent, that means fireworks stores had sales of $7.6 million in the past year.

"The revenues generated by these retailers have far exceeded expectations," he [David Heidrich] said.

The state's newest casino generated more than $65 million in net revenues in its first year of operation, topping its original projections as well as the revenues of the state's more-established casino.

Hollywood Slots in Bangor had about $58 million in revenues.

But people shouldn't be too impressed with the first-year numbers, because what they show is how much money people — predominantly from Maine — lost to gambling. Casinos don't add to the economy or to the community, they merely redistribute money.

TOTAL: $130.6 million

But, we are broke, have no money for police, fire, public works, education, and the poor.

That's $100 for every man, woman, and child in the state of Maine, spent on noise and gambling. Shocked

Talk about waste!

...and we say government wastes money? duh

How much of a tax increase per household, if any, did your local government ask for this past spring? whistling
