Who's afraid of the big, bad "blogs" and the truth?

Post by T on Fri Sep 26, 2008 10:05 pm

"I think the format is a little over the top. It could give people looking at it the impression that Rumford is not a good place to be. There is also a question of whether the town is setting itself up for a lawsuit. I don't know the legality of putting someone's picture in the paper before they've been found guilty in a
court of law," he [Belanger] said.

"What if you did exactly what you're doing, but put it only in the Rumford Falls Times as opposed to putting it in the Sun Journal? The difference is that the Sun Journal has blogs and they put it out all over the state. The Rumford Falls Times is local and I think it could serve the same purpose," he said, noting again that it was only someone's recommendation and something to consider.

Me too. I managed a store in Freeport years back and it was robbed. Within half an hour of my giving the police artist a description of the girl, they were back with a stack of photos for me to look at - her picture was on top. She had robbed other stores, etc. all over southern Maine and had a familiar pattern of behavior. A simple way to engage the community in helping itself.

This is an attempt, using a scare tactic (threat of a lawsuit), at trying to control and criticize the RPD and to further The Rumford Reporter clique's agenda.

Mr. Belanger, you should know "the legality". If you don't, why not ask Chief Carter and educate yourself?

Would it be any more or less legal to put it in the RFT? Illogical or incomplete thinking, based on fear.

Based on an agenda...

BTW, if it's illegal (it's not), the FBI would be in a peck o' trouble.

If a casino were to come to Rumford, I suspect Rumford's Crime Report Bulletin would grow. It may be necessary to expand its coverage to the Portland and Bangor area news outlets or even out of state. Or, maybe it would be best to sweep the issue under the rug. Afterall, Rumford is not crime ridden "aside from a couple streets in the Waldo area". *

The problem the select few have with the crime blog is people can see that the police do work, despite what TRR says.

From The Rumford Reporter:

"Selectman Belanger's concerns, which are similar to those of others in
the community including mine, pointed out that it didn't seem right
that we would publish pictures and names of people in the paper before
they had even been found guilty by a court of law. "

This statement is confusing:

"It's one thing to publish a picture of someone who is "wanted" by the law but it is a
completely different thing when we are publishing people's pictures prior to being found guilty."

What Mark Belanger says:

"I think the format is a little over the top. It could give people looking at it the impression that Rumford is not a good place to be. There is also a question of whether the town is setting itself up for a lawsuit. I don't know the legality of putting someone's picture in the paper before they've been found guilty in a court of law," he said.
"Is it possible to suspend the way they're doing it for now until we can get a legal opinion and have some discussion on it?" asked Belanger.

What Mark Belanger means:

My friends and I worked hard to reduce the budget of RPD by giving out false statistics about how busy the RPD is. The Rumford Crime Report bulletin is making my friends and I look bad because it shows that we weren’t honest.

TRR and Mark are worried about accusing people before they are proven guilty? What a riot...that's going to make me smile all day...lol
