Job-seeking immigrants describe cold reception from Maine employers

By J. Craig Anderson, Portland Press Herald - June 22, 2018

Angela Okafor studied law in Nigeria, and after emigrating to Maine she studied and passed the state’s bar exam on her first try.

But Okafor, who speaks perfect English, said she couldn’t get a single Maine law firm to hire her. She ended up getting a job washing dishes.

“I worked in a dish room, a licensed attorney,” she said.

Immigrant entrepreneurs in Maine who spoke on a panel Friday as part of the Startup Maine conference in Portland said that despite a severe shortage of knowledge workers in the state, anti-immigrant prejudice prevents many Maine companies from hiring skilled foreign nationals.

Even with a suspended law license, Republican Seth Carey still won a Maine DA primary

By Susan Sharon, Maine Public • June 13, 2018 6:09 pm

One surprise in Tuesday’s election that may have gone under the radar is the unofficial victory of Seth Carey in the Republican race for the district attorney nomination in Androscoggin, Franklin and Oxford Counties. Carey’s apparent win is unusual for several reasons, including the fact that his law license is currently suspended.

Carey’s law license has been suspended because he allegedly sexually abused a woman in his home in Rumford. A former client who moved in with him, the woman was granted a protection from abuse order against Carey. He’s appealing both actions and says he will spend the next five months trying to clear his name. Maine law requires candidates for DA to be lawfully admitted to the bar.

Carey faced an uphill battle in the race not just because of his history of legal problems — he’s been suspended before. After the allegations against Carey were made public, the Republican party chair asked Carey to bow out because of what she called “actual, credible accusations.”
