If Boivin had treated JSN the way he treated Judy, I would defend JSN (as much as I'd dislike being in that position.....).

My understanding after talks with the town manager and several selectmen, is that Mr. Boivin agrees he didn't handle procedure properly; there is NO debate on that. I believe Chairman Boivin owes the citizens an apology. There is always hope but in my experience, Mr. Boivin is not prone to apologies.

So answer my questions Kevin. .Lets talk about her behavior. She got up to speak at the podium, from my understanding things happened pretty fast and the item was tabled (incorrectly I might add), she went to speak possibly not knowing it was tabled. I only assume this because she asked why she wasn't allowed to speak. She then stated she didn't understand because she had been waiting two and half hours to speak (understandable I'd want an explanation too, especially if I didn't understand the procedure). Never once did she raise her voice, never once did she speak in a negative tone, never once did she question the ability to understand English to Arthur. So how was this disruptive? I remember something you sent me about being a little more understanding to those less perfect than myself, maybe you should send that same message to Arthur.

I agree with Judy, he has left the impression to citizens that saw the video and who were present, that if they were to get up and speak they could be the target of this same intimidating behavior.

911, they never tabled the item- they just kind of mumbled amongst themselves and slid over it.

I find it very difficult to understand what the selectmen are saying most of the time, unless they are deliberately speaking into their microphones, which they often don't do. And C, you're right.......it was as if they all mumbled among themselves and went on to a different item. They should have asked if there was anyone who was planning on speaking on the first responder item and then explained that it was being tabled. The whole thing was poorly handled.

It is improper public forum etiquette to publicly post private messages. Regardless of what Kevin's opinion is, he sent a private message to one member in order to solicit their opinion only. The intent wasn't for it to be published on the site.

Thank you Dave for the lesson in online etiquette. I never knew a formal etiquette existed online. Although I seem to remember a wise person telling me one time to never ever post or privately send something you do not want made public, not saying its right, just offering a word of advise. Can I google the online etiquette thing or can you provide me a link?

Re: Selectboard Meeting- (1-19-09 video now available)

Post by 911Dispatcher on Sat Jan 24, 2009 5:05 pm

I find number seven interesting

Step 1

Read the forum rules. Even if you're excited to be a member of a new
forum and can't wait to join in, take the time to find the group policy page and read it thoroughly. Some forums are fussier than others about Internet etiquette.

Step2

Lurk a little before you dive right in. Read a number of posts, or
check out the group's archives. Get a feel for the tone of the forum so
you can participate accordingly.

Step3

Remember your face doesn't show. Words alone can convey sentiment, but without benefit
of inflection or facial expression, they can be misconstrued. Use
descriptive wording, emoticons or .gifs to ensure your meaning is
clear. By the same token, don't jump to conclusions about another
person's intent in posting an unclear comment. When in doubt, ask for
clarification.

Step4

Type in lowercase or standard case, not in all caps. By the rules of
netiquette, all caps equates to shouting. If you type with all caps,
you will annoy and possibly offend other forum members.

Step5

Say online exactly what you would say in person. In other words, if you
wouldn't say it to the person's face in front of your Grandmother, you
shouldn't type it into a forum.

Step6

Be respectful. Internet etiquette is similar to standard etiquette in
this area. Appreciate that your opinion is one of many. You can
disagree with another person without being disrespectful or rude
online.

Step7

Ignore Trolls. Netiquette guidelines are very specific where they're
concerned. If you engage in conversation, you'll raise your blood
pressure and empower the Troll. You can't win a flame war, and you
can't sway a Troll's opinion. Often, they don't even care about the
subject; they live for the conflict and nothing more. Trolls are common
and not worthy of your time. Ignore their posts—no matter how
inflammatory—and eventually they'll get bored and move on.

Unless a private message is threatening or illegal, I don't agree that it is fair game to be published publicly.

The whole concept of the private message is to allow public forum participants the ability to discuss items off-line - with the expectation that the content remain private.

Dave quick question? Is it okay to print out PM's and then either take them to someones house, coffee shop, or lets say email them to others under the same etiquette? (I believe a 'former' member wanting to be the victim may have done this a few times). I'd like clarification.

I guess I think pm's should remain private unless they are really over the top. I did mention getting pm's that were disconcerting. Hmmmm.. it's a grey area, but i also agree that anything you write to ANYONE can come back to haunt you.

But i see PM's as private... between two people to discuss privately an issue or to work things out (or not, as the case may be).

Why was Kevin pm'ing someone he doesn't even know? I suspect he was being called out publicly on behavior he was trying to promote privately.

Hmmm, I've given this one a lot of thought. Perhaps he was still trying to get his point across even though in my opinion he should refrain from any such comments, especially due to his position on the Appeals Board. Let's be straight here, I'm not too happy with Kevin's pms, I'm not going to pretend I am. He is however entitled to his opinion just like anyone else. I'm not necessarily certain that the possible motive for his pm entitled him to confidentialty from someone he doesn't know.

As for what happened at the meeting, anyone can watch the video and judge for themselves. I'm okay with that because I think it's pretty clear what happened. I will say here too that Mr. Boivin has not come forward to date with an apology of any kind. Honestly, I didn't expect one but I have refrained from commenting mainly because I wanted to give him an opportunity to do so in a graceful way.

For myself, I am okay. For the town, I am disappointed. I feel the citizens deserve to be treated better than this. That said, it's onward and upward.

He is not entitled to confidentiality in this case as his PMs were unsolicited.

He PMed me recently, and I do not consider it confidential (though I will not post it publicly). I did not PM him and I did not ask him to PM me.

If an unsolicited letter is delivered to my home via the USPS, I do not consider it confidential. I consider it junk mail.
