I am seriously thinking about cancelling our subscription.

Post by T on Sun Jul 13, 2008 11:30 pm

From The Lisbon Reporter:

"I am seriously thinking about cancelling our subscription" (to the Sun Journal).

It seems like people are constantly making this threat when they don't like what the Sun Journal publishes. Do these people think it'll make a difference? It seems juvenile to me.

My subscription has been cancelled for some time now. I try not to use idle threats. When I have not been satisfied by the response of management on an issue, I have contacted advertizers for some radio & TV stations and told them why I am not seeing their ads anymore. It has a BIG effect on a media outlet. You have to hit the bottom line. When their income is in jeopardy, they tend to respond. So far, I have been very tolerant of the antics of the SJ. It takes a lot to get me upset.

So johnnyg, are you saying I don't have a right to an opinion? Just because you choose not to post an opinion on each topic doesn't mean that I must refrain from expressing mine. It is just like the public access channel. Just because you choose not to use it doesn't mean others can't submit programs to the channel with things that are of little interest to you. According to federal laws, the access channel cannot deny anyone the right to have their program aired as lonng as it meets the standards. I refer you to the case of Rock Roll 'em or Die a decade or so ago. It was offensive to many, but the producer had the right to have it telecast. If the station had refused, it could have ended in a nasty court battle in which the producer may have been awarded compensation for the abrigement of his first ammendment rights.

While this is not a public venue, it is open to the public and discussion is encouraged. I provide my input, and others respond. That is how free speech works.

I guess you are right , it just seems that not one subject gets by you. You do however have the right of freedom of speach, I stand corrected.

Sun Journal is the compilation of the views of many. Each with his/her own rights to free speech. Why are you condemning that? With a publication and circulation as large as theirs they cannot be expected to please everyone at the same time. I'm sure if you or I wanted to submit a story or letter to the editor it would be published unless it was presented in a derogatory fashion. Usually online at the bottom of each story, readers are invited to share their views or differing opinions, furthering the free speech concept. The advertisers who purchase space on the pages of Sun Journal probably don't care if you disagree with a particular story or the viewpoint of a writer at any given time, they are still getting their overall value for their money. Even TRR's urging for people to cancel their subscriptions I suspect have had a small impact on SJ's bottom line.

I have heard that from the TRR crew for awhile now, yet I have never heard of one tangible example. Itís just expressed as an opinion.

Is it just because TRR doesnít control the flow of information on it? Does it not spend enough time trying to knock down the Fire Department and Police Department? Perhaps itís mostly because it knocked TRR for their irresponsible and mean spirited writing and the damage itís caused the town?
